DANISH ORIGINAL

 Regnvejrsdag i november

 Jeg vil male dagen blå
 med en solskinsstribe på
 vælge lyset frem for skyggen
gi' mig selv et puf i ryggen
tro på alting, selv på lykken.
 Jeg vil male dagen blå.

 Jeg vil male dagen gul
 solen som en sommerfugl
 sætter sig på mine hænder
 alle regnvejrsdage ender
der står "maj" på min kalender
 Jeg vil male dagen gul.

 Jeg vil male dagen rød
 med den sidste roses glød
 jeg vil plukke kantareller
 løvetand og brændenælder
leve i det nu der gælder.
 Jeg vil male dagen rød.

 Jeg vil male dagen grøn
 dyb og kølig flaskegrøn
 sætte tændte lys i stager
 glemme rynker, dobbelthager
 håbe på mit spejl bedrager.
 Jeg vil male dagen grøn.

 Jeg vil male dagen hvid
 nu hvor det er ulvetid
 købe franske anemoner
 for de sidste tyve kroner
 lytte til Vivaldis toner
 Jeg vil male dagen hvid.

 Jeg vil male dagen lys
 strege ud og sætte kryds
jeg har tusind ting at gøre
 klokken elleve fem og fyrre
 blev november hængt til tørre
 Jeg vil male dagen lys.

LITERAL TRANSLATION

 Rainy Day in November

I am going to paint the day blue
With a stripe of sunshine on it
Choose the bright side rather than the shade
Give myself a nudge in the back
Believe in everything, even in good fortune
I'm going to paint the day blue.

I'm going to paint the day yellow
 The sun like a butterfly
Comes to perch on my hands
All rainy days are are ending
 My calendar announces 'May'
I'm going to paint the day yellow.

I'm going to paint the day red
With the glow of the last rose
I am going to pick mushrooms
 Dandelions and stinging nettles
Live in this present that matters
I'm going to paint the day red.

I'm going to paint the day green
 A deep, cool bottle green
Place lighted candles in their sticks
 Forget about wrinkles, double chins
Hoping that my mirror is cheating
I'm going to paint the day green.

I'm going to paint the day white
Now that it's a time wolves
 I will buy poppy anemones
 for my last twenty Kroner
Listen to the tones of Vivaldi
I'm going to paint the day white.

I'm going to paint the day bright
I will cross out and tick in
I have got a thousand things to do
 At eleven forty-five
November was hung on the drying rack
I'm going to paint the day bright.

METERED TRANSLATION

This unrhymed metric version
follows the cadence of the original.

I am painting this day blue
With a stripe of golden sun
 Choosing brightness, not the shadow
 Nudge myself on with decision
Trust in all things, even fortune
I am painting this day blue.

Yellow I will paint this day

Like a butterfly the sun
On my hands is softly perching
All the rainy days are ending
"May" is what my diary's saying
Yellow I will paint this day.

I am painting this day red
With the glow of the last rose
I am going to pick mushrooms
 Dandelions, stinging nettles
 Living in this present moment
I am painting this day red.

I am painting this day green
 A deep, soothing bottle green
In their sticks I'm placing candles
Not a thought of weight gain, wrinkles
 Hoping that my mirror's cheating
I am painting this day green.

I am painting this day white
 Facing current times of wolves
I am going to buy spring flowers
 For my final twenty Kroner
 Listen to tunes of Vivaldi
I am painting this day white.

I am painting this day bright
 Crossing out and ticking in
Heaps of items on my checklist
 At eleven forty seven
November went on the clothes line
I am painting this day bright.
